Intriguing. Emotional. Directions.
LISTEN
Toby Gad and Dave Eggar’s The Eureka Concert is a brilliant ensemble of piano and cello. What is most intriguing is the mystery, and the emotional directions it takes. It pulls you into the deeper thoughts of what feels equally important and equally beneficial. Profoundly beautiful. Undauntingly sad. Often giving. Often selfish. The cello moans for attention while the piano asks for an ear.
“Eureka, II” opens you up to what might be your last tear and your next smile. The deep-rooted “Eureka, III” takes you down a road of memories, detonating everything—what you’ve thought through and what you’ve buried. It gives you energy to build. The way the cello pants on “Eureka, V” might steal your heart if you are not careful. The instruments walk up to each other and share a tender conversation we are so grateful to overhear. They produce feelings that connect with others. Unspoken words that invite you in. The elegant piercing of the cello guides you to a better place. The intensity of the ascending grand piano carries you to moments of gratitude and prepares you for future joy.
For two instruments to be so full of sound and yet so simple is an ability that sets these men apart. The “Eurekas,” each numbered, each its own thing—a shared frame, separate centers. Make no mistake about it. This is not a repeat performance or a carbon copy. The album displays a unique intricacy. Each song has its own personality. This piece of musical architecture places all of us in a richer stratosphere. How we feel during, after, and before each repeat listen, makes us better for finding time to push play. Toby Gad and Dave Eggar—we salute you. We found what we needed.
